Description

On 25 August 2025, Bahrain's Ministry of Interior (General Directorate of Traffic) signed an agreement with Beyon Solutions, part of the majority state-owned Beyon Group, to deploy 500 AI-powered 'smart' traffic cameras using computer vision to automatically detect violations - mobile-phone use, seatbelt non-compliance, speeding, red-light running, illegal lane use and window tinting - without human intervention, including through windscreens via infrared sensors in low light. The first phase went live on 1 February 2026, with further expansion planned through September 2026 and October 2027.

Bahraini press (newsofbahrain.com, gdnonline.com, tradearabia.com, February 2026) confirmed the system had 'already recorded a number of traffic violations' including phone use and seatbelt offences shortly after activation. However, no source found - including Beyon's own announcements and Ministry statements through July 2026 - discloses actual violation counts, resulting fine revenue, or any accident-reduction rate, and neither party has published a contract cost figure.

On 1 July 2026, the same vendor and camera model were extended to a second use case: the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs announced AI-connected cameras to monitor littering and vandalism at roughly 200 public sites, explicitly citing the traffic system's 'success' as precedent - though again without releasing quantified results from the traffic deployment it was citing.

All public communications about the system use qualitative, forward-looking language ('aims to,' 'supports Vision 2030') rather than measured outcomes. This is a real, multi-sourced, operating deployment, but one with no published performance, cost, or oversight data - an evidence-thin case worth tracking rather than an evaluated success.
