Cyprus's Fire Service, Forestry Department, Civil Defence and Police used AIDERS — an AI drone-mapping platform built since 2019 by the University of Cyprus's KIOS centre — during the deadly July 2025 Limassol-area wildfires to monitor terrain firefighters could not reach.
AIDERS is an AI-assisted emergency-response platform developed since 2019 by the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus, combining drone-collected imagery, heterogeneous sensor data and a mapping platform to give first responders a shared operational picture during disasters. It has been rehearsed in multiple full-scale exercises with Cyprus's Civil Defence.
During the wildfires that broke out near Malia, in the Limassol district, on 23 July 2025 — fires that burned over 100 square kilometres, destroyed 191 homes across 15 villages and killed two people amid temperatures above 44°C — Cyprus's Fire Service, Forestry Department, Civil Defence and Police used AIDERS to monitor remote or inaccessible terrain with two DJI Mavic 2 drones, feeding live camera and geographic data to a central Command and Control Centre. Officials credit the system with improving fire-front tracking, evacuation planning and coordination among the four agencies.
The EU Civil Protection Knowledge Network's account describes a "high success rate" but does not publish a quantified detection or coordination-time benchmark, and AIDERS is described as an "application-specific algorithm" platform rather than a named deep-learning model, so its precise AI methodology and measured performance are not independently documented.
