Guinea's Ministry of Education launched Barrin, a free national AI study companion offering baccalaureat candidates ten years of past exam model answers and alternative solution methods, alongside a public commitment to train teachers on responsible use.
Guinea's unified baccalaureat is a high-stakes national exam sat by tens of thousands of candidates, many without access to private tutoring, in a system where structured revision materials are scarce outside major cities.
On 8 May 2026, during a ceremony launching a training programme for 190 science teachers in Greater Conakry, Minister of National Education Alpha Bacar Barry announced "Barrin" ("companion"), a free AI tool intended for any baccalaureat candidate nationwide. As described by the Ministry, Barrin gives students access to model answers for the last ten years of mathematics exam papers plus alternative solution methods, with the tool launching the week following the announcement.
The Minister explicitly conditioned the tool's value on educator readiness, stating it "will have no importance" unless teachers, supervisors and examiners are themselves sensitised and trained in AI methodology — an explicit, if informal, acknowledgment of the governance work required around the tool. Separately, Guinea's two top-scoring 2026 baccalaureat graduates, Lansana Pascal Molmou (first nationally in mathematics) and Golinskaya Aicha Lilya (first nationally in experimental sciences), told local press they had used generative AI to support research and work through difficult exercises during their revision — though neither account confirms use of Barrin specifically, and both students stressed AI was a complement to regular study and teacher guidance, not a substitute.
This is an early-stage, ministry-run initiative. No independent usage statistics, adoption figures, or learning-outcome evaluation have been published; the tool's actual reach and effect on exam performance remain unverified.
