Better Reykjavík (Betra Reykjavík), launched in May 2010 by the Citizens Foundation with Reykjavík City Council, is a digital participatory-governance platform using AI for idea classification, recommendation, toxicity moderation, translation and transcription.
Over 16 years, more than 70,000 residents (58%+ of Reykjavík's population) have engaged with the platform, submitting 10,000+ ideas and 21,000+ debate points; about 700 citizen proposals have been formally adopted by the city council, and 12.5% of the population votes in the annual participatory-budgeting cycle. The open-source YR Platform has been replicated in 20+ countries.
