The Humbo project applies farmer-managed natural regeneration (FMNR) to degraded hillsides in southern Ethiopia. Seven cooperatives were established in 2005 and it became Africa's first CDM forestry project in 2012.
The project regenerated 2,728 ha and is credited with about 880,000 tCO2e over 30 years, with Guereza monkeys and leopards returning to the restored forest.
