Context

Mosquito-borne diseases (West Nile virus, malaria, chikungunya, dengue, Zika) are expanding in Europe as climate change alters mosquito habitat suitability; European dengue-transmission suitability rose over 40% by 2018 versus the 1950-1954 baseline, and over 3,000 dengue cases were reported across five EU countries between 2018 and 2021.

Objectives

EYWA (EarlY WArning system for mosquito-borne diseases), built by a 16-partner consortium led by the BEYOND Centre of NOA, aims to improve health-system preparedness, optimise vector control, and inform citizens by combining satellite Earth observation, entomological/epidemiological data and machine-learning models to forecast mosquito abundance and disease risk.

Activities

The EYWA web platform integrates entomological, epidemiological, climatic and land-cover data from France, Germany, Greece, Italy and Serbia, producing mosquito-abundance and human-risk predictions and monthly reports to authorities; a companion citizen-facing app, Mosquito Vision, was launched in four Greek regions, reaching over 2,400 villages, and 2021 awareness campaigns in Central Macedonia reached over 31,000 households.

Results

Secured funding covers 67% of total expenses for 2020-2025 operation across the five member countries. The MAMOTH mosquito-abundance model was transferred with high confidence to five European regions and additional mosquito species. EYWA and its coordinator were awarded the EIC Horizon Prize on Early Warning for Epidemics (EUR 5 million) in early 2022.

Conclusions

The consortium cites openness (open data via NextGEOSS, GEOSS, Climate-ADAPT) and model transferability as strengths, but notes that system sensitivity and accuracy vary across geographic contexts, and that bureaucracy and reluctance to adopt new tools can limit uptake by health authorities.
