Active since 1997, Medicon Valley Alliance is the cross-border cluster for the Øresund life-science region (Eastern Denmark, Southern Sweden) — 400+ companies, 17 universities, 32 hospitals, ~41,000 biotech jobs, and 330+ members including Novo Nordisk and Lund University.
Medicon Valley Alliance (MVA) is the official cross-border cluster organisation for Medicon Valley, the bi-national life-science region spanning Eastern Denmark and Southern Sweden either side of the Oresund Strait; informal collaboration began around 1992 alongside the Oresund Bridge project, and MVA has operated under its current name since 1997.
MVA exists to coordinate universities, hospitals, companies and public bodies across the Danish-Swedish border into a shared life-science ecosystem.
MVA has grown to more than 330 members - universities, hospitals, biotech, medtech and pharma companies, contract research organisations, science parks and public bodies - and since 2011 has organised joint research around four thematic 'Beacons' (systems biology, structural biology, immune regulation and drug delivery).
The region MVA coordinates is home to more than 400 life-science companies, 17 universities and 32 hospitals, employs an estimated 41,000 people in biotechnology, saw around 100 new biotech and medtech companies founded between 1998 and 2008, hosted 60% of Scandinavian pharmaceutical companies by 2008, and its life-science sector accounts for more than 20% of Denmark and Sweden's combined GDP - figures that describe the wider ecosystem rather than an audited measure of MVA's own contribution.
MVA is one of Europe's longest continuously operating cross-border cluster organisations, anchored by major members such as Novo Nordisk, Lundbeck and Lund University, though no documented case of another region replicating its specific governance structure was found.
