An adaptive learning system rigorously evaluated by MIT's J-PAL: students gained 2–2.5× the control group's progress in maths and language in ~4.5 months, with the weakest learners gaining the most.
Mindspark, developed by Educational Initiatives, is an adaptive learning system that tailors maths and language content to each student's level, deployed in Indian schools including in Rajasthan and Delhi.
The system aims to deliver personalised, equitable learning gains for students across the achievement spectrum, at low per-student cost.
MIT's J-PAL evaluated Mindspark through a randomised controlled trial comparing student progress in maths and language against a control group over roughly 4.5 months, at an estimated cost of around US$15 per student per month.
Mindspark students gained roughly 2–2.5 times the progress of the control group in both maths and language. Gains were uniform across achievement levels, gender and wealth, with the weakest-performing students showing the largest improvements.
The evaluation describes Mindspark as one of the best-evidenced edtech interventions in the world and a model for equitable, evidence-based personalised learning, now deployed in government schools.
