Context

Developed over roughly a decade by an international consortium — the Trace R&D Center (University of Wisconsin, later University of Maryland), the Inclusive Design Research Centre at OCAD University in Toronto, and the nonprofit Raising the Floor — Morphic grew out of the Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure (GPII) research programme. It lets a user configure accessibility settings (text size, contrast, colour, text-to-speech, and more) once, store the profile in the cloud, and have it appear automatically — then disappear again — on any participating shared computer.

Activities

The project is funded by the US National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), the US Department of Education's Rehabilitation Services Administration, and past European Commission grants. In 2024 the team added 'AT-on-Demand,' letting a user's personal assistive-technology configuration follow them onto library, school and job-centre computers.

Results

As of mid-2024, Morphic was installed on more than 10,000 computers across universities, public libraries, community centres and workplaces in the United States and Canada, including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of Michigan, St. Louis Public Library, Virginia's American Job Centers, and ServiceSource's disability-service network across 32 states. By 2022, the programme had recorded more than a quarter of a million uses on public-access computers. In 2024, Morphic was named a Zero Project Award recipient, selected from 523 nominations across 97 countries.

Conclusions

The reported adoption figures come from the consortium's own published accounts rather than an independent compliance audit, so the scale claims should be read as self-reported programme data corroborated by the Zero Project jury review, not as a third-party usage audit.
