Newsela uses AI/NLP to rewrite the same news and curriculum articles at multiple reading levels so teachers can assign one topic to a mixed-ability class. Four state-level, WWC-aligned ESSA Tier II studies found consistent, replicated reading gains — the most substantiated eviden
Newsela's platform takes the same non-fiction articles, primary sources and curriculum content and automatically rewrites each piece at multiple Lexile reading levels using natural-language-processing models, letting a teacher assign one shared topic to students reading years apart.
In February 2024, Newsela released results from four state-level ESSA Tier II studies — independent, third-party evaluations designed to align with What Works Clearinghouse 'Standards With Reservations' — to test whether the platform accelerates reading and social-studies learning.
The four studies covered California (2,500 students, 162 schools, grades 6-8, 81% Hispanic/Latino), Washington (1,330 students, grades 6-8, 12% English-language learners), Michigan (188 students, grades 3-4) and Wisconsin (264 eighth-graders).
Results were consistent across states: California users scored about 4 percentile points higher than non-users on the state assessment; Washington users scored about 5 percentile points higher on the i-Ready reading assessment; Michigan fourth-graders using Newsela weekly exceeded the state's reading-performance average; and Wisconsin students using Newsela's social-studies content showed roughly double the expected year's growth. Company materials describe the average effect as equivalent to three to four additional months of literacy growth.
The studies were commissioned by Newsela rather than independently initiated, which is a standard but real limitation of ESSA Tier II evidence — the methodology is externally reviewed against WWC standards, but the research questions and funding originate with the vendor, and no fully independent, peer-reviewed replication was located.
