Microsoft Research India tool, co-designed with Sikshana Foundation, cut lesson-planning time from 60–90 min to 60–90 sec for 1,043 Karnataka public school teachers (Dec 2024–Mar 2025); ACM peer-reviewed study documents reduced stress and shift to activity-based pedagogy.
Shiksha Copilot is an AI-powered lesson-planning assistant developed by Microsoft Research India with the Sikshana Foundation, a Bengaluru-based NGO, built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and supporting English and Kannada, for teachers in low-resource government schools in Karnataka.
The tool uses a structured human-AI co-creation workflow: it generates an initial lesson plan via Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) from the official Karnataka curriculum, expert curators review it for pedagogical quality, and teachers customise it for their classrooms. It was deployed across Karnataka government schools from December 2024 to March 2025, covering 1,043 teachers and 23 curriculum curators.
The mixed-methods evaluation found lesson-planning time fell from 60–90 minutes to 60–90 seconds per plan, teachers reported significantly reduced administrative burden and stress, and the tool promoted a shift from rote to activity-based pedagogy.
The project was highlighted by India's national AI body (IndiaAI.gov.in), and Microsoft plans to extend Shiksha Copilot to additional Indian states.
