Context
Siyavula was established in Cape Town in 2012, growing out of a Shuttleworth Foundation-funded open-textbook project. The platform provides CAPS-aligned open textbooks for Grades 4–12 in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Chemistry, freely downloadable and distributed as hardcopy by South Africa's Department of Basic Education.
Objectives
To pair open textbooks with an AI engine that sequences practice questions of appropriate difficulty, drawing on cognitive science and motivation research, and to reduce data-cost barriers for lower-income learners via low-bandwidth design and zero-rating.
Activities
The platform runs on low-bandwidth mobile networks and is zero-rated by MTN for eligible users. A Michael & Susan Dell Foundation-funded deployment placed the platform in 40 Gauteng government high schools reaching 17,000 students. A Mastercard Foundation grant supports three-year expansion into four additional African countries through 2026 with a formal MEL framework.
Results
By August 2025 the platform had served 250 million practice questions to an estimated 2 million+ secondary students across Africa, with 350,000 new sign-ups in 2022. A cross-sectional quasi-experiment by Roberts & Moloi (2021) examining the related JumpStart multi-component programme in Ekurhuleni district found statistically significant improvements in EGMA scores, with effect sizes growing from 0.52 to 0.94 over four years across 5,724 learners. An investor-commissioned survey reported 97% of learners felt their grades improved.
Conclusions
The JumpStart study assessed a multi-component government intervention, so isolating Siyavula's own software contribution is not possible from published data. A 2023 CPUT thesis evaluating the platform for learners with special educational needs found teachers identified significantly more challenges than benefits, including technical issues, overwhelming content and limited adaptability. Connectivity and device access remain barriers in rural South Africa. The commercial entity Siyavula Education closed in 2023; Siyavula EdTech Enterprises was spun out in 2024, introducing organisational uncertainty.
