GEF/UNEP's IWEco project rehabilitated landslide-prone farmland in Saint Lucia's upper Soufrière watershed: 75 farms (22 ha) assessed, 4,000+ trees planted from a 10,000-seedling nursery, targeting 90 ha of degraded land to cut landslide risk and sedimentation.

Saint Lucia's Soufrière watershed (Fond St. Jacques/Migny area) suffered decades of land degradation from unsustainable slope farming, exposing communities to landslides and flash floods and silting the downstream Soufrière Marine Management Area.
Activities
Under the GEF-funded, UN Environment-implemented IWEco project, locally trained assessors surveyed 75 farms covering 22 hectares to build customised restoration plans; a community tree nursery (10,000 seedlings) supplied 4,000+ plants for denuded slopes and riverbanks, alongside alternative-livelihood support and awareness campaigns launched April 2018, targeting 90 hectares rehabilitated.
Conclusions
Available sources describe outputs (farms assessed, trees planted) rather than independently verified landslide-incidence or sediment-load reductions, so achieved risk-reduction impact remains to be confirmed.
