Gallup's 2025 survey of 2,232 US public K-12 teachers finds weekly AI users self-report saving 5.9 hours a week, but only 32% use AI weekly and just 19% work in schools with an AI policy.
In spring 2025 (18 March–11 April) Gallup, with the Walton Family Foundation, surveyed 2,232 US public K-12 teachers online about AI use at work.
About six in ten teachers used an AI tool during the 2024-25 school year, but only 32% use it at least weekly, 28% use it infrequently and 40% not at all. Weekly users report saving an average of 5.9 hours a week (about six weeks a school year); monthly users report 2.9 hours. The biggest savings come from worksheets and assessments, administrative work and lesson preparation.
Only 19% of teachers say their school has an AI policy. Teachers in schools with a policy report 2.3 hours saved a week versus 1.7 without, though the data cannot show that the policy causes the difference. Among users of each task, 64% say AI improved the quality of materials adapted to student needs and 57% say grading and feedback improved; 16% or fewer report lower quality.
Caveats: all time and quality figures are self-reported, the survey does not measure student learning, the benefit is much smaller for occasional users, and the headline 'six weeks' is the publishers' own conversion of the weekly figure. It is evidence on teacher capability and workload, not on learning outcomes.
