A randomized study of 187 Iranian EFL teachers at Urmia University tested three AI tools — a reflective-practice platform, an adaptive digital-skills tutor and an emotion/communication analyzer — with the largest self-reported gains in classroom rapport-building.
University EFL programmes often struggle to translate generic AI-literacy training into teachers' day-to-day classroom practice. A study by Akbar Bahari of Urmia University, published online in March 2026 in Interactive Learning Environments, tested whether narrowly targeted AI micro-interventions could move specific professional-development goals rather than general digital-skills exposure.
The explanatory mixed-methods randomised study aimed to compare three AI-enhanced interventions — a Reflective Practice Platform, an Adaptive Digital Skills Tutor, and an Emotion and Communication Insight Analyzer — for their effect on Iranian EFL teachers' reflective practice, digital skills and classroom rapport.
212 university EFL teachers were screened and 187 retained (100% post-randomisation retention), randomly assigned to one of the three AI-enhanced interventions, with the Emotion and Communication Insight Analyzer offering real-time sentiment-trajectory visualisations, turn-taking alerts and empathic rephrasing prompts.
All three interventions produced statistically significant perceived gains; the largest effect was on classroom rapport-building (η² = .942, p < .001), attributed to the Emotion and Communication Insight Analyzer, while the Reflective Practice Platform produced the largest overall improvements across outcomes measured.
The author cautions these are short-term, self-reported perceived gains rather than outcomes confirmed by classroom observation or student-reported results, and flags Iran's cultural context and participants' high baseline motivation as possible confounds; the single-institution, single-author study has not yet been independently replicated.
