Description

Tiflolibros is the online library of Asociación Tiflonexos, a Buenos Aires non-profit. Blind and low-vision volunteers scan and digitise books into formats usable with screen readers, braille displays and other assistive devices, working with libraries, publishers and schools. Access is free, with a suggested donation.
Reported scale: the Zero Project profile (data as of 2021) cites more than 10,000 users in 50 countries, over 65,000 accessible books made available since launch, and 450 organisations using the library. An Internet Society post (January 2017) reported 52,200 Spanish-language titles, 8,000+ members and a team of 15. Sources differ on the founding date (1999 vs 2001).
Policy influence: Tiflolibros is credited with helping secure Argentina's 2007 copyright-law reform enabling accessible-format copies, later followed by other Latin American countries. It received the UNESCO Prize for Digital Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in December 2016. Its Reading Access Points programme links users without adapted devices to the library and builds ICT skills; Zero Project reports about 1% of Latin America's visually impaired population reached in 2021, against a goal of 5%.
Caveats: all figures are self-reported by the operator or taken from award profiles; no independent evaluation of learning or employment outcomes was found. Funding relies on donations, grants and service income, and financial sustainability is a stated goal.
