Since 2006, Liberia's Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET) has run community "Peace Huts" where women mediate disputes and refer gender-based violence cases to police and courts. The network has grown to 38 sites nationwide and won a UN Population Award in 2019.
Growing out of the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace movement that helped end Liberia's civil war, WIPNET has run community 'Peace Huts' since 2006 — spaces where women volunteers mediate domestic violence, land disputes and rape-referral cases and act as watchdogs over local police and justice services, now spanning 38 sites nationwide.
The Bo Waterside Peace Hut, established 2019, has 178 members (160 women, 18 men) combining dispute mediation with livelihood activities; the network received the 2019 UN Population Award for its contribution to GBV prevention and peacebuilding.
