Context

This Congressional Research Service (CRS) fact sheet compiles statistics on women's political participation in national governments worldwide, drawing on the Inter-Parliamentary Union, International IDEA, the CIA World Factbook and news reports, and discusses barriers such as discriminatory laws, gender stereotypes, limited education access and disproportionate poverty.

Results

As of 2023, women held 26.7% of legislative seats worldwide, up from 15.3% in 2003; seven countries (Cuba, Rwanda, Nicaragua, Mexico, Andorra, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates) had 50% or more women in their legislatures as of August 2023; and 32 countries had a female chief of state or head of government. The report notes that, at 2022's pace of growth, global parliamentary parity would not be reached for nearly 60 years.
