On 28 May 2026, India's Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, met NASSCOM and industry representatives in New Delhi to review the recommendations of an AI Curriculum Taskforce set up jointly by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), NASSCOM and industry experts. The Taskforce had completed a baseline study of existing Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) Computer Science and allied programmes at Indian institutions, finding that while AI content had expanded, most courses still under-taught Generative AI, MLOps and foundational-model development, with only 25–30% practical exposure.
The Taskforce recommended replacing lecture-based teaching with industry use-case learning from the first semester, raising practical exposure to 40–75% depending on specialisation, and embedding Responsible AI and AI governance throughout the curriculum rather than as a standalone module. Structural proposals include credit-linked, semester-wise rollout with certificate, diploma and advanced-diploma exit points, capstone projects, structured train-the-trainer schemes, and engaging industry professionals as adjunct faculty. A 'triple helix' model of government, industry and academia was proposed to give colleges shared access to GPUs, edge devices and software platforms. Agreed next steps include formal adoption by AICTE for semesters five to eight of ongoing B.Tech batches, full integration for new cohorts, and a parallel AI-literacy track for non-STEM disciplines.
As of the meeting, the Taskforce's output was a set of recommendations and a completed baseline study, not yet an implemented, evaluated curriculum — no student outcome data exists yet, and formal AICTE adoption timelines were still being finalised.
