Description

On 10 December 2025, The Gambia's Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Mbour, Senegal, to establish an AIMS satellite centre in The Gambia. The agreement gives Gambian students and lecturers access to AIMS's postgraduate programmes in mathematical sciences, data science and artificial intelligence, both at the Senegal campus and across the wider AIMS network in Rwanda and South Africa.
The satellite centre — housed at the former School of Journalism building on the University of The Gambia's Kanifing campus — was formally launched on 23 June 2026 at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center in Bijilo, presided over by Higher Education Minister Professor Pierre Gomez and AIMS Senegal President Professor Mouhamed Moustapha Fall, coinciding with Africa Science Week. Under the MoU, AIMS will support professional development for Gambian university lecturers and secondary-school mathematics teachers, and the partnership includes shared research projects, datasets and innovation/incubation support, with a long-term roadmap to grow the satellite into a full AIMS Centre of Excellence tied to The Gambia's Vision 2050 strategy.
The centre had just opened at launch, with no cohorts, enrolment figures or completed research output yet reported, and no public funding figure was disclosed for the initiative.
