A $30M Aga Khan gift transformed a rubble mound in central Cairo into a self-financing 30-hectare park drawing 1.5–2 million visitors a year, while excavation uncovered a buried 12th-century Ayyubid wall and spurred restoration of the adjoining Darb al-Ahmar district.
Cairo had almost no public green space — green space per resident was roughly the size of a footprint — after decades of unchecked development had virtually eradicated the city's historic parks. A 30-hectare mound of centuries of accumulated rubble sat in the heart of the city, between the Fatimid old city and the Ayyubid Citadel.
In 1984 the Aga Khan Trust for Culture committed $30 million to convert the site into a public park as part of its Historic Cities Programme. Between 2000 and 2008, contractors removed more than 80,000 truckloads (over one million cubic metres) of debris, built three freshwater reservoirs (each 80m diameter, 14m deep) to irrigate the site's highly saline soil, propagated more than two million plants in dedicated nurseries, and planted over 655,000 of them. Excavation also uncovered a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the 12th-century Ayyubid city wall, buried to a depth of 15 metres, which the Trust restored as part of the project.
Since opening, Al-Azhar Park has drawn 1.5 to over 2 million visitors annually and generates enough revenue from admissions and its restaurants to fund its own maintenance, without ongoing subsidy. It is the largest green space added to Cairo in more than a century. The Trust used the park's momentum to fund restoration in the adjacent, historically deprived Darb al-Ahmar neighbourhood, where residents were employed in horticulture and construction. The park has set a net-zero carbon target for 2032, backed by solar panels and efficient water pumps, though no independently measured carbon-sequestration or biodiversity data have been published.
No published, independent monitoring of the park's ecological performance (species counts, stormwater capture, cooling effect) exists; claims of environmental benefit rest primarily on descriptive project reporting from the funder rather than third-party evaluation.
