Anguilla's .ai Domain Windfall — Monetising a Legacy Country-Code Suffix Amid the AI Boom

Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory of around 15,000 people, was assigned the '.ai' country-code top-level domain in the 1990s under the standard ISO 3166 allocation, with no expectation it would ever be commercially significant. That changed sharply after the November 2022 launch of ChatGPT, when businesses and developers began racing to secure '.ai' domain names for AI-related products and branding.
According to the IMF, Anguilla's .ai domain registrations rose from about 144,000 in 2022 to 354,000 in 2023, and government revenue from domain sales reached roughly US$32 million in 2023 - just over a fifth of total government revenue that year. Estimates for 2024 range from about US$39 million (IMF-cited press reporting) to a locally reported end-of-year projection above US$100 million; the government charges US$140 for a two-year registration and benefits from a roughly 90% renewal rate that locks in recurring income.
The IMF has credited Anguilla's government with channelling part of the windfall into productive investment, including renewable-energy projects, while also cautioning that the revenue is unlikely to keep growing indefinitely: officials themselves expect it to stabilise at around 15% of government revenue as the initial registration rush cools. Because Anguilla depends heavily on tourism (about 37% of GDP), the domain-fee income is valued chiefly as a rare, low-effort diversification lever for a micro-economy - though its long-term durability rests entirely on continued global demand for '.ai' branding, a risk the IMF has explicitly flagged.
