Description

In winter semester 2024/25 and summer semester 2025, the University of Graz piloted "Artificial Intelligence and Society," a 16-ECTS interdisciplinary micro-degree delivered entirely online and free of charge to students at any of the universities of the Arqus European University Alliance. The curriculum is split into three modules — Basics (4 ECTS), Application (6 ECTS) and Implementation (6 ECTS) — covering programming fundamentals, AI models, data preparation and learning algorithms alongside the legal and ethical framework for AI development and use. Instruction is offered in German or English, and technical materials (lecture slides, Jupyter notebooks) are published as open educational resources.

The pilot is documented in a peer-reviewed book chapter ("Micro-degree Artificial Intelligence and Society," Springer Nature, 2026), evidence that the design and delivery of the programme underwent academic scrutiny; however, the publicly available summary of that chapter does not disclose quantitative completion or outcome figures, so this entry is scored on verified structural and access facts rather than on unpublished results.

Registration for the most recent pilot cohort closed 27 June 2025; the module remains free for Arqus-alliance students, extending access to AI-literacy training beyond a single national higher-education system.
