Only 8% of community-college students who intend to transfer follow the traditional "two-plus-two" pathway smoothly, and mapping transfer equivalencies by hand is a huge task — in California alone, comparing courses across institutions involves more than 36 million possible course pairs, according to figures presented at AACRAO's 2025 annual meeting.
In late 2024, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU), consulting firm Sova, and UC Berkeley education researcher Zachary Pardos launched the AI Transfer and Articulation Infrastructure Network (ATAIN). Its software platform, CourseWise, ingests participating institutions' course catalogs, past articulation decisions and enrollment records to suggest course equivalencies and similarity-based mappings, with each suggestion linked to supporting evidence such as transcript references.
By January 2025, 57 two- and four-year colleges were testing the platform, growing to a first cohort of 60 institutions by April 2025, including systems such as SUNY, Texas A&M, the University of Hawaiʻi and Minnesota State, with a second cohort forming and an ambition to eventually cover more than 120 campuses. The project is funded by the College Futures Foundation.
As of the sources reviewed, ATAIN remained in its pilot phase: institutions were using the tools and giving feedback to shape further development, but no published data yet quantified how many credits were preserved, how much staff time was saved, or whether time-to-degree improved for transferring students.
