Context

Brunei's Ministry of Education (MoE), through its Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre and Department of Educators Management, adapted the international TeachAI "AI Guidance for Schools Toolkit" and its Seven Principles for Ethical AI in Education, building on Brunei's earlier May 2024 Digital Citizenship Framework.

Objectives

Disseminate practical AI-use guidance to school leaders and teachers, then codify it into a formal governance framework covering data protection, academic integrity, student mental-health safeguards, and alignment with Brunei's Malay Islamic Monarchy values.

Activities

Nationwide "AI Guidance for Schools Toolkit" workshops ran from 25 June to 27 July 2024 at Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri in Bandar Seri Begawan. In September 2025, at the 35th National Teachers' Day Celebration, the MoE launched the "GenAI Guidance for Education – Handbook Edition", developed jointly with the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry, the Prime Minister's Office, the Content Advisory Council and Cyber Security Brunei.

Results

318 cluster heads, school leaders and teachers completed the 2024 toolkit workshops. This was followed by a ministry-wide Handbook covering data protection, academic integrity and student safeguarding, co-developed across five government bodies.

Conclusions
