PaideIA — Argentina's National AI-in-Education Programme and Federal Observatory, with Buenos Aires' Mandatory K-12 AI Curriculum

In August 2026, Argentina advanced AI-in-education governance on two linked fronts. Nationally, the Secretaria de Educacion (Ministerio de Capital Humano) launched PaideIA (Programa Argentino de Innovacion de la Educacion con Inteligencia Artificial), a person-centred programme structured around three axes -- computational thinking, AI application and AI development -- differentiated by school cycle and age.

Argentina's Federal Education Council unanimously approved the creation of a Permanent Observatory of Artificial Intelligence in Education under PaideIA, tasked with mapping research and teaching practice nationally and coordinating federal training and awareness activities. At city level, the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) government made AI and digital-protection content mandatory across its primary and secondary curricula from 18 August 2026, becoming -- per CABA's own announcement -- the first Latin American city to do so, though UNESCO data cited alongside the announcement notes eleven countries already have national AI curricula.

As of launch, the Observatory was in an early implementation phase (platform evaluation, generative-AI use guides, a catalogue of technology-based learning projects, and dropout early-warning design). The CABA curriculum progresses from basic AI recognition in early grades toward critical evaluation of AI outputs: pupils are taught about AI 'hallucinations', algorithmic bias and deepfake detection, data-privacy protection and information verification, alongside practical AI-assisted production (infographics, podcasts, image/video, text analysis).

CABA reports that more than 30,000 teachers had already received AI training ahead of the curriculum mandate; no citywide student learning-outcome data was published alongside the announcement.

Both PaideIA and the CABA curriculum were only weeks old at the time of these announcements (August 2026), so no multi-year continuity or outcome evidence yet exists.
