ITI4Building Wings (Costruire le Ali) is an experimental educational robotics project run by Fondazione Mondo Digitale (FMD) for children with specific learning disorders (DSA), involving at least three classes at the Viale dei Consoli Comprehensive Institute in the Tuscolano district of Rome. FMD's mission is to promote an inclusive knowledge society, focusing on groups at risk of exclusion. The project is funded by the Lazio Region.
Transform a mobile robot into a smart toy that captures participants' attention through coordinated, synchronised interaction with the environment, turning robots into interactive social mediators for children with learning disorders.
Uses a cooperative, constructivist "learning by doing" methodology facilitated by a teacher expert in educational robotics. Real robots used include Bee-bot (an entry-level robot toy for kindergarten/early primary that teaches basic programming and spatial logic) and Lego Mindstorm/simple LEGO models programmed via computer. A "firtual" methodology combines virtual and physical teaching, extended through an online robotic community for children with disabilities and their families on the Phyrtual.org social-innovation platform.
No formal evaluation of the project has been carried out ("Evaluation: No"), so outcomes are not independently documented.
