Description

After the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes exposed how slowly California could confirm whether its bridges were safe to reopen, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) began piloting BRACE2 (Bridge Rapid Assessment Center for Extreme Events), a structural health monitoring platform built by the STAIRLab research group at UC Berkeley.
BRACE2 streams data from sensors installed on monitored bridges — including the Painter Street overpass — into a cloud platform within about one minute, combining physics-based structural models with the incoming readings to estimate each bridge's condition after an earthquake or other extreme event in near real time. The goal is to let engineers move from routine, calendar-based inspections to condition-based ones, focusing limited inspection crews and funds on bridges the data flags as changed, while reducing unnecessary lane and bridge closures after an event.
Caltrans-funded evaluation documents show the pilot expanded from an initial five bridges to 22 across the state, with cloud-hosting costs estimated at under $20 a month for the full 22-bridge deployment — evidence that the running cost of the approach scales cheaply even if upfront sensor installation and model calibration do not. The platform's computational engines are open source, and the project has been reviewed through the U.S. DOT's federal ITS Deployment Evaluation programme as well as presented in Caltrans' own Research Connections webinar series.
As of the most recent public updates, BRACE2 remains a monitoring and decision-support pilot rather than a statewide operational standard, and its performance has not yet been tested against a major damaging earthquake.
