Since 2022, Planète Urgence, Orange and Cameroonian communities have restored 100+ hectares of Wouri-estuary mangrove near Douala — including a 3-ha Bojongo pilot at ~70% sapling survival — against a 30-year, 1,000-ha target, as national mangrove loss continues near 3,000 ha/yr.

Context

Since November 2022, Planète Urgence has partnered with Orange, Sia Partners and Cameroonian authorities on CAMERR, targeting 1,000 hectares of mangrove restoration in the Wouri and Ntèm estuaries over a 30-year horizon to 2052.

Activities

A closely monitored 3-hectare pilot at Bojongo in Douala shows planted saplings at a roughly 70% survival rate, with a nursery holding over 7,000 seedlings and 12 local residents employed in restoration work.

Results

As of late 2025, the programme had restored more than 100 hectares nationally.

Conclusions

Cameroon loses an estimated 3,000 hectares of mangrove per year, so restoration is still running far behind loss.

Implementation
