China's Sloping Land Conversion Programme (Grain for Green / SLCP), launched in 1999, is the world's largest payments-for-ecosystem-services programme, paying rural households to convert sloped farmland to forest and grassland.
Since 1999 it has converted 34.3 million ha and paid 535 billion yuan to more than 41 million rural households; soil erosion fell 17.3% in Shaanxi and the new forests stored about 405 million tCO2e by 2020.
