Description

City of Trees is a registered charity (1202636) working to plant 3 million trees in Greater Manchester, one for every resident, as part of the Northern Forest ambition of 50 million trees in northern England. It plants and cares for trees, runs a Citizen Forester programme and a citizen-science Species Monitoring project, and works with partners including Groundwork Greater Manchester, The Conservation Volunteers, the Canal & River Trust, Mersey Rivers Trust and the University of Manchester.
In 2018 it commissioned what was then the most comprehensive i-Tree Eco survey undertaken in the UK, with over 6,000 trees surveyed by 57 trained surveyors. It estimated 11,321,386 trees and 15.7% canopy cover, with roughly one million trees at risk from pests and diseases. Modelled annual benefits include 847 t of air pollutants removed, 1,644,415 m3 of stormwater intercepted and 56,530 t of carbon sequestered, worth about £33.3M per year; the replacement cost of the tree stock is put at £4.7bn.
The survey underpins the urban forest plan 'All Our Trees'. Caveat: benefit figures are model outputs for existing trees, not measured outcomes of the planting programme, and no independently audited progress against the 3-million target was found.
