Description

Colombia Aprende is Colombia's national educational portal, operated by the Ministerio de Educación Nacional (MEN) since 2004 and hosting more than 50,000 Ministry-validated digital resources across all educational levels.

In May 2025, at the Bogotá International Book Fair (FILBo), MEN launched an AI transformation of the portal under the motto 'Colombia Aprende en la era de la IA.' Two AI-powered tools were integrated.

The first is an intelligent content recommender that suggests personalised pedagogical routes — including class activities, evaluations, and bibliography — tailored to a user's educational level, subject area, and grade. All recommendations draw exclusively from the Ministry's curated resource library, limiting hallucination risk while maintaining pedagogical quality control.

The second is an AI virtual assistant ('asistente virtual') that helps students, teachers, and families navigate the platform, resolve doubts, and discover relevant content based on their interests and queries. To promote sustainable and responsible AI use, each account is limited to 40 monthly interactions.

The initiative is grounded in Colombia's National AI Policy (CONPES 4144, approved February 2025), which mandates ethical, transparent, and inclusive AI deployment in public services, with explicit guidance on algorithmic bias, deepfakes, and technological dependency. A Phase 2 expansion, planned for the second half of 2025, will extend the recommender to key curriculum areas including social sciences, technology, citizenship, and socio-emotional development.

At launch, MEN reported that more than 1.1 million registered users stood to benefit from the new AI features. No independent evaluation of learning outcomes has yet been conducted, reflecting the recency of the rollout.
