Universidad Icesi's Eduteka Center in Cali, Colombia — a programme with more than two decades of experience in ICT-in-education — launched EdutekaLab AI+ED in April 2023 as a free, nonprofit suite of generative-AI tools for teachers and students across Latin America. Its four modules are GUIA (adaptive tutoring that identifies conceptual gaps), IDEA (AI-assisted design of classroom activities), RUBRIK (AI-generated assessment rubrics) and PLANEO (curriculum and lesson planning from course prerequisites and objectives).
According to EdutekaLab's own submission to the MIT Solve programme, by April 2024 the platform had 87,089 registered users, 4,278,801 annual visits and had generated 227,589 educational products, with usage concentrated in Mexico, Colombia, Spain and Peru. The organisation's broader claim of reaching over 1,000,000 students and 300,000 educators is self-reported and has not been independently verified.
A peer-reviewed 2025 study published in Universidad de los Andes' journal Vías y Sonidos surveyed 408 Latin American educators on their use of the platform: 72% of basic-education teachers reported high adoption of its gamification and rubric tools, 68% of higher-education teachers regularly used IDEA to personalise lesson plans, but only 45% of secondary-school teachers reported regular use — evidence of adoption patterns and perceptions, not independently measured learning outcomes.
No randomised or quasi-experimental evidence yet links EdutekaLab's tools to measured gains in student learning, and the organisation's own stated targets — a 20% increase in engagement and a 15% increase in academic performance — remain aspirational rather than demonstrated results.
