Context

Macau's Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) announced it will fund 'artificial intelligence experimental classrooms' in local primary and secondary schools from the 2026/27 academic year, adding a dedicated grant under the Education Fund's School Development Subsidy Programme, building on the Medium- and Long-Term Plan for Non-Tertiary Education (2021-2030).

Activities

The plan has three parts: AI teaching materials issued to schools; a first-phase 'smart teaching service platform' offering an AI question bank, automated paper-setting and automated marking; and AI and robotics added to the primary and secondary curriculum. It builds on the 2024/25 academic year, when the government allocated about MOP 15 million (roughly US$1.87 million) to schools for AI software.

Conclusions

At this stage the announcement is about funding, infrastructure and a platform still being built, not yet about measured classroom results. Regional context (mainland China's 8-hour annual AI-education minimum, Beijing's 1,400+ schools reaching 1.83 million pupils, Hong Kong's grants) shows Macau moving in step with, not ahead of, its neighbours.

Implementation

Indicative cost
Medium (€50k–€500k) — MOP 15 million (~US$1.87 million) already spent on AI software in 2024/25; additional grant for 2026/27 classrooms not yet quantified.
Time to results
Medium (1–3 years) — AI software funding since 2024/25; experimental classrooms planned from 2026/27.
