Lao PDR's Ministry of Education and Sports, through its Research Institute for Education Sciences (RIES), partnered with UNICEF Lao PDR, the UNICEF Global Learning Innovation Hub and the Finnish company Eduten (spun out of the University of Turku) to pilot Eduten's AI-driven adaptive maths platform for Grade 3 students. Announced in December 2023, the 12-week pilot enrolled a treatment group of up to 500 students using Eduten's app — which draws on a bank of 200,000+ curriculum-alignable tasks and adjusts task difficulty and learning paths to individual performance — against a control group of 300 students continuing standard instruction, across 10 schools. One teacher per school received a three-day training programme delivered by Eduten in Thalat, Vientiane Province, before rollout.
According to UNICEF Innovation's June 2025 implementation report, among 384 Grade 3 students who completed both pre- and post-assessments, participants who used Eduten showed gains of 35.7% in math proficiency and 51.4% in arithmetic fluency relative to the control group. The Finnish National Agency for Education independently describes Eduten's underlying mechanism as adaptive exercises where "AI suggests and the teacher acts accordingly," and notes the company has shown roughly 22%-better results over comparable 12-week periods in other national pilots (e.g. Mongolia, Lithuania).
Two caveats temper the result: the 384-student assessed sample is notably smaller than the up-to-500-student treatment group originally announced, suggesting attrition or incomplete assessment coverage that isn't fully explained in public materials, and the outcome figures are reported by UNICEF and Eduten themselves rather than an independent third-party evaluator — the full implementation report could not be independently retrieved for this review. No confirmed nationwide scale-up in Lao PDR had been announced as of this pilot's reporting, though Eduten pilots elsewhere (e.g. Bhutan) have led to national expansion.
