FG–ICEDT AI Capacity-Building Programme for Nigeria's Federal Unity College Teachers

On 31 July 2026, Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Education formally launched a nationwide AI capacity-building programme for teachers across the country's Federal Unity Colleges, signing an implementation agreement with technical partner ICEDT Consult Limited in Abuja. The programme trains teachers to use AI tools for lesson planning, classroom instruction, student assessment and general productivity, and is framed by the ministry as part of President Bola Tinubu's 'Renewed Hope Agenda' for education modernisation.
The national rollout follows a pilot conducted in six Federal Unity Colleges — one in each of Nigeria's six geopolitical zones — which the ministry says 'demonstrated the effectiveness' of the AI training approach, though neither the ministry's own announcement nor the accompanying press coverage discloses quantified metrics such as completion rates, teacher assessment scores or measured classroom impact. The full programme is intended to reach approximately 11,700 teachers nationwide.
Ministry officials Gabriel O. Amudipe (Director, Education Support Services Department) and Oladele Fapohunda (Deputy Director) signed on the government side, alongside Dr Abdulrahman Orosanya, ICEDT Consult's Head of Strategic Partnerships and a named Learning Scientist. No public funding figure has been disclosed, and no independent third-party evaluation of the pilot phase has been published.
