Description

In May 2026 the Hellenic Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, working jointly with the Ministry of Digital Governance, adopted a Ministerial Decision (published in Government Gazette B 2639/12.05.2026) setting the conditions under which artificial intelligence tools may be used in public secondary education, for both face-to-face and distance learning.
The framework requires that AI "support, rather than replace" teaching and learning. It prohibits fully automated assessment of students or teachers, and bans deepfake content produced without consent, fabricated references, and profiling of students or staff. Use of AI applications by students and teachers is voluntary and must remain under teacher supervision; AI use may not be linked to student grading, academic progression or teacher evaluation.
Each school must appoint an "AI use coordinator" responsible for overseeing implementation and acting as the point of contact for safety and data-protection questions, and schools must run awareness-raising activities and teacher training on AI. The decision explicitly aligns with the EU AI Act and the GDPR, emphasising transparency, cybersecurity and personal-data protection.
As a very recently adopted regulatory framework, no independent evaluation of its implementation or effects exists yet; the evidence here is the text of the decision itself and contemporaneous reporting, not measured outcomes.
