iCow was founded in October 2010 by Kenyan organic farmer and entrepreneur Su Kahumbu Stephanou, initially as 'Mkulima F.I.S.H.' (Farmer Information Service and Hotline), an interactive voice response (IVR) service for smallholder dairy farmers who could not reliably read text or afford smartphones. The concept won the US State Department-backed Apps4Africa 2010 competition. Field testing showed the IVR calls were too costly and slow for daily use by farmers on feature phones with limited airtime, so the team redesigned the service around SMS, soft-launching on 3 June 2011 at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi and officially launching as iCow 1.0 with Safaricom in June 2012 — a concrete example of adjusting the interface, not just the content, to match users' actual literacy and connectivity rather than an assumed ideal.
Farmers register a cow's insemination date by SMS short code and receive automated reminders timed to gestation milestones, plus weekly tips on feed, breeding, disease and milk yield, all in short, simple text messages designed to be readable by farmers with basic literacy. An independent survey conducted seven months after the SMS launch, reported by VOA News and Big Think, found 42% of enrolled farmers reported higher incomes as a result of the information, with participating farmers seeing milk yields rise by roughly two to three litres per animal per day.
The service later added USSD (2012) and expanded regionally, releasing iCow 2.0 in October 2015 and deploying in Tanzania and Ethiopia from 2016, before moving toward Android, KaiOS and web platforms through 2017–2021 — a service still operating and evolving 15 years after launch. Coverage from Engineering for Change and other outlets reports a farmer database in the hundreds of thousands, though iCow's own historical documentation candidly notes an early gender skew, with under 13% of users being women — a limitation the platform has had to work to address rather than a solved problem.
