Description
Illariy is an AI-generated news presenter that delivers content in Quechua, the indigenous language spoken by roughly 4 million Peruvians who have historically been excluded from Spanish-only state communication. It was built by the MediaLab research group at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), Peru's oldest public university, in partnership with the state news agency Andina and the official government gazette El Peruano. Researchers Óscar Huamán-Águila, Carlos Fernández García and Carlos Gonzales García developed a phonetic transcription approach tuned to the Ayacucho-Chanka dialect, reporting 80–90% recognition accuracy in their published methodology. Illariy first appeared reading Andina's news bulletins in 2023, then expanded to TikTok, where it also teaches Quechua vocabulary to a broader youth audience. In January 2025, Peru's IP office INDECOPI granted Illariy an official trademark registration, formalising its status as a state-backed initiative rather than an informal experiment, and the project has drawn coverage from international press. What is not yet published is any independent measurement of comprehension gains among Quechua-speaking citizens or a comparison against human-presented alternatives — the evidence so far documents technical accuracy and reach, not verified public-value outcomes.
