Metroselskabet's adaptation strategy integrates climate-proofing from the earliest planning/feasibility stage of each metro line. Station-specific expected water levels were modelled (a 1:2,000-year cloudburst event for the existing M1/M2 lines, up to a 1:10,000-year event for the newer M3 City Ring and M4 lines), setting elevation levels (3-5 metres for new stations) for entrances, ventilation, technique rooms and shafts. Measures include raised entrance steps, drainage grates and pumping capacity, floodgates, waterproof doors, backflow protection, and gabion/concrete flood walls up to 2.3 metres high on exposed above-ground sections.
The Cityringen (M3/M4) line cost about DKK 22.4 billion (approximately EUR 3 billion), slightly above the DKK 21.3 billion original budget estimate; climate-proofing costs are included but not separately itemised. Annual metro passengers rose from 64.7 million (2018) to 78.8 million (2019) after the new line opened.
Success factors include integrating flood protection from the feasibility stage, building on experience from the earlier M1/M2 lines, and consistency with the city-wide adaptation plan.
