Context

International House Helsinki (IHH) is a service centre operated by the City of Helsinki, established under the Finnish Government's Talent Boost Programme (Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment).

Objectives

It aims to lower the friction international newcomers and their employers face by bundling work-related immigration, permits, registration and free counselling on international recruitment in one place.

Activities

IHH consolidates public services for relocating skilled workers and their families and runs the Entry Point mentoring programme, pairing international newcomers with local mentors to build professional networks and intercultural skills.

Results

The Entry Point mentoring programme paired 164 participants into 82 mentoring pairs. IHH is reported to have improved employment prospects for international degree students and companies' readiness to internationalise.

Conclusions

The one-stop-shop model is presented as a good practice because it reduces the friction of relocating skilled workers, and it has been emulated elsewhere, including International House Vilnius.

Implementation

Implementation detail (cost, timeline, staffing, conditions for success) is not yet available for this practice.
