Context

A write-up of a Slush side event on gender equality in startup investing, co-organised by Inklusiiv with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, UN Women Finland, and FiBAN (Finnish Business Angels Network), held as part of the Generation Equality campaign in Helsinki, Finland.

Objectives

To address systemic biases faced by women and other underrepresented groups (including ethnic minorities and non-binary founders) in accessing startup funding, and to foster a more inclusive and equitable investment environment for startups, investors, policymakers and ecosystem stakeholders.

Activities

A panel/discussion event examined why progress on gender equality in investing has stalled, drawing on external studies including a 2020 Unconventional Ventures report on Nordic funding and the 2021 State of European Tech report.

Conclusions

The event concluded that funding progress for women-led and mixed teams (and for ethnic-minority founders) in Europe and the Nordics has been flat or regressive, and that slow progress on diversity is capping the addressable market for ideas and talent.
