Description

As sugarcane and onion irrigation intensified in Maharashtra's Ghod River basin, groundwater and downstream flows came under sustained pressure. ITC Limited, a diversified conglomerate with paper and agri-business operations reliant on the basin, set up a multi-stakeholder watershed programme with WWF India, the Advanced Center for Water Resources Development and Management (ACWADAM), hydrogeologists from IISc Bangalore and the Government of Maharashtra, organising local Water User Groups to manage the effort.
Commissioned hydrogeological studies mapped high-potential recharge zones, guiding a combination of rainwater harvesting structures, managed aquifer recharge and demand-side efficiency measures for water-intensive sugarcane and onion cultivation.
GIS-based hydrological monitoring found the basin became water-positive within five years, with a 21% improvement in downstream flow — outcomes independently documented in a 2023 peer-reviewed case study in the journal Irrigation and Drainage. ITC has since extended the river-basin model to programmes in four more states, but those wider, company-reported national figures (covering roughly 1.6 million acres and 32,000-plus structures) have not undergone the same independent academic scrutiny as the Ghod basin case, so their evidence strength is weaker.
