Context

Kukumuty is a community-led Miombo woodland enrichment and carbon project launched in 2022 in the Chibabava district of Sofala Province, Mozambique, covering the Nhaumue and Mangunde communities. It is promoted by the Spanish NGO Azada Verde together with the Belgian carbon-project developer Climate Lab and Reseed Indico, and in May 2024 it became the first project certified under the Plan Vivo Version 5 Carbon Standard.

Objectives

The project aims to restore native Miombo woodland while generating carbon-credit revenue for local communities, guaranteeing that at least 60% of that revenue is returned to fund beekeeping, schooling and water infrastructure.

Activities

Activities include planting endemic tree species such as Brachystegia spiciformis, Julbernardia globiflora and Pterocarpus angolensis, developing agroforestry and beekeeping livelihoods, and channelling carbon-credit revenue into community services.

Results

Lifetime carbon removals are estimated at around 74,000 tCO2e since 2022, and the project published its first annual report in 2025, with verified carbon totals so far still limited relative to the lifetime projection.

Conclusions

As a young, recently certified project, Kukumuty still has gaps in baseline biodiversity monitoring and fire-management documentation, and its long-term impact will depend on sustained monitoring and reporting.
