La IA en el Aula — AI-Assisted Lesson Planning for Lima Public School Teachers

Since March 2025, the Lima Regional Education Directorate (DRELM) has partnered with the World Bank and Microsoft to give nearly 500 public primary school teachers, across more than 200 schools serving predominantly low-income families in metropolitan Lima, access to Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat for lesson planning and content creation.

The initiative is designed as a randomised controlled trial by the World Bank, with teachers randomly assigned to treatment (Copilot access) and control (no Copilot) groups across matched schools, and student learning outcomes assessed via standardised tests at the start and end of the academic year.

Teachers use Copilot Chat to generate personalised lesson plans, differentiated learning activities, curriculum materials, literacy stories and interactive mathematics activities, after receiving prompt-engineering training and guidance on responsible AI use emphasising critical human review of AI outputs.

An interim World Bank survey found average lesson-plan preparation time fell by 40%, and 87% of teachers reported feeling more effective in their professional role since adopting Copilot. Formal RCT endline results, including standardised student learning test data, were expected from the World Bank in late 2025 but had not yet been published in the source material.
