Context

HM Prison and Probation Service's Justice Digital team built Launchpad, a secure in-cell laptop platform for education, self-service and rehabilitation content, launched via private beta at HMP Erlestoke in June 2024 before extending nationally across England and Wales.

Results

By mid-2024 the rollout reached 17 prisons and more than 13,000 prisoners; an early two-week survey at HMP Erlestoke found 74% of prisoners had used Launchpad Home and Auth, 77% of those more than once, and 69% clicked through to Home each time they signed in.

Conclusions

The Prison Reform Trust has separately documented continued gaps and inconsistency in prison digitisation nationally, and only engagement data (not outcome evaluation) has been published for Launchpad itself.
