Description

On 21 August 2025, Mianz College — a Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA)-accredited higher-education institute based in Malé — launched the country's first homegrown Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, a three-year, six-semester, 360-credit programme including a 30-credit capstone project.
The curriculum begins with programming in Python and C++, data structures, discrete mathematics, calculus and statistics before progressing to machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, big-data analytics and advanced algorithms. The college designed the degree for hybrid delivery, combining in-person classes with e-learning, specifically so that students living across the Maldives' atolls can enrol without relocating to Malé. Vice Rector Dr Fathimath Shaheema described a two-year development process aiming to 'transform Maldivians from AI users, to AI creators.'
As a programme that opened for its first intake only in August 2025, there is no public data yet on enrolment numbers, student progression, graduation or employment outcomes; MQA's registry confirms the qualification's accreditation, but evidence of the degree's real-world impact remains to be established as the first cohort progresses.
