Description

On 17 August 2026, Cameroon's Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC) presented at the AIDL Distance Learning Centre a strategy to integrate AI-generated simulations into secondary science teaching. Minister Nalova Lyonga, flanked by Secretary General Nkot Fabien and national pedagogical inspectors, announced that the ministry had produced more than 250 free, bilingual (French/English) simulations covering chemistry, biology, arts and letters, and industrial techniques -- all usable offline on low-end devices, and all produced in under one month at zero marginal cost.

MINESEC framed the initiative explicitly as an equity measure: many Cameroonian secondary schools have no physical laboratory, so AI-generated simulations let students in under-resourced schools run experiments they could otherwise never access. Officials publicly contrasted the effort with a University of Colorado Boulder simulation project that spent roughly 1.5 billion FCFA to produce only 35 simulations, arguing that AI-assisted content generation can massively lower the cost of quality science-teaching materials.

The minister was explicit that the tool is meant to support, not replace, structured pedagogy, cautioning that AI use must remain 'structured' and 'reasoned' and stressing the importance of teacher-led prompting skill. As of the launch, no independent evaluation of student learning outcomes from the simulations had been published; the reported evidence to date is programme-delivery data (simulation count, subjects covered, cost, and offline compatibility) rather than measured learning gains.
