Context

The Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) Delta in southern Myanmar contains one of the largest remaining areas of coastal mangroves in Asia, degraded by decades of unsustainable aquaculture expansion and charcoal extraction. The Worldview International Foundation (WIF) launched the Ayeyarwady Delta Mangrove Blue Carbon project in 2015, the first VCS-registered mangrove restoration project in Myanmar.

Activities

Restoration combines direct replanting of 500 hectares of severely degraded mangroves with natural regeneration across the wider 2,065-hectare project boundary in the Magyi, Thabawkan and Thaegone village tracts, Pathein District, Ayeyarwady Region.

Results

The 20-year VCS accounting period (2015-2035) targets 3.6 million tCO2e total, approximately 184,000 tCO2e per year, independently verified under Verra's Verified Carbon Standard. Approximately 11,000 people across 16 villages benefit from alternative livelihoods tied to restoration activities and carbon revenues. Co-benefits include erosion control, nursery habitat for coastal fish species, and storm-surge buffering.

Conclusions

Myanmar's February 2021 military coup disrupted international civil society operations nationwide. WIF confirmed continued restoration activities as of 2022, but community benefit distribution under junta-controlled governance is subject to significant uncertainty.
