Context

Vietnam's National Innovation Center (NIC), run by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, opened its flagship facility at Hòa Lạc Hi-Tech Park on 28 October 2023. The roughly 20,000 sqm complex was initiated in January 2021 and built with nearly VND 1 trillion (about US$41-44 million) funded through sponsorships from domestic and international businesses rather than the state budget.

Activities

At launch, NIC signed cooperation agreements with Google, Samsung, SpaceX and Intel. On 5 December 2024, NVIDIA signed an agreement with the Vietnamese government to open NVIDIA's first Vietnam AI research and development centre, alongside a joint 'Vietnam AI Academy' talent-training programme with NIC and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST).

Results

The Vietnam International Innovation Exhibition 2023, held at the launch, drew around 200 exhibitor booths from technology firms.

Conclusions

The centre is still very new: public reporting to date documents its investment, physical scale and corporate partnership agreements, not yet measured job-creation, spin-off, or productivity outcomes.
